Highland Council Budget On 15 February 2018, the Highland Council voted to close 9 public toilets in Ward 1. Among those on the closure list are toilets in Kinlochbervie near the Harbour, Rhiconich, Smoo Cave, Scourie and Tarbet (near boat to Handa Island). The Community Council is opposed to the closures and wrote to Steve Barron, CEO of Highland Council. Click the link below for the letter and the response.
Letter from KLB Community Council Regarding Proposal to Close Toilets
Response from Highland Council
26 April 2018 – Save Our Loos Petition
The Community Council initiated a paper petition distributed locally as well as an on-line petition. The Community Councils of Durness and Scourie actively supported the petition. Ultimately the petition received 14,641 signatures. The petition received a great deal of publicity and was submitted to the Highland Council in October 2018. Although Highland Council chose not to consider the petition by itself, it was referred to in the final report to Council on the issue of public conveniences.
19 June 2018 – Public Meeting
Kinlochbervie Public Information Meeting 19 June 2018 Minutes
The Community Council hosted a public meeting in June 2018 that was attended by all 3 Community Councillors as well as Amenities staff. Around 125 people attended the meeting. Many travelled a long way – some up to 2 hours. There was a clear message that communities were very concerned and wanted the toilets saved. There was also huge opposition to the notion of community groups taking over the operation of the toilets.
